John Mulaney’s estranged wife Anna Marie Tendler is reflecting on the changes in her life and the challenges she faced in 2021 as she embraced the new year.
On Friday, Tendler took to Instagram to share a lengthy message in which she opened up about how she’s coping and healing during a time of “grief” and “trauma” for many.
The artist began her post by discussing change, which she said can be “soft and small” or “large and loud” but “cannot be warded off.”
The 36-year-old mentioned the “unfathomable” losses of the last two years, seemingly referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that there is no “normal” to go “back” to anymore.
“My own brain is well acquainted with the elusiveness of hope that materializes in sporadic and ephemeral waves,” she shared. “I suppose, in part, this is what it means to live with depression and anxiety.”
Tendler added that she believes “melancholia” is “amplified by circumstance” and “the circumstances of my year have been harsh and punishing,” without mentioning her ex specifically.
She went on to share that she has found herself asking, “When will I feel normal?” before realizing that there is only the “new” normal instead of the one she had grown accustomed to.
“So how does one digest grief? How do we metabolize trauma, collective and individual?” Tendler added. “How, precisely, do we sit with, in order to move through? We call our friends; we allow ourselves to laugh. We cry in parked cars. We work; we rest. We throw plates just to watch them break; we make things with our hands. We write, we read, we watch movies. We listen to music. We run, or walk, or sprint, or dance. We ask for help or learn to ask for help. We love or learn to love again.”
Tendler then toasted to “all the things we did this year to cope” and to “all we will do next year to heal.”
“An infinite history of pain and suffering occurred before this time, yet here we all are, surviving and creating and laughing at TikTok videos. So long 2021. For better or worse I will carry a piece of you with me forever,” she concluded.
Tendler’s post comes just weeks after her estranged husband welcomed a baby with Olivia Munn.
Tendler and Mulaney, who wed in 2014, announced their split in May last year. Two months later, the former “Saturday Night Live” writer filed for divorce.
“I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” Tendler said in a statement to People at the time. “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
Mulaney confirmed in September that he is dating Munn, 41, and that they were expecting their first child. The couple secretly welcomed a son a day before Thanksgiving.
Mulaney and Munn revealed their baby boy’s name, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, as well as shared the first photos of their bundle of joy on Christmas.
“Meet Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. He has his whole life ahead of him. He hasn’t even tried seltzer yet,” Mulaney wrote via Instagram. “I’m very in love with him and his whole deal. Happy Holidays.”
When the news broke that her ex had welcomed his first child, Tendler seemingly threw shade in the form of the Lana Del Rey song “Norman F–king Rockwell.”
