Royal servants liken Covid-secure quarters at Queen’s Balmoral estate to Colditz prison camp

ROYAL servants have likened their Covid-secure quarters at Balmoral to Colditz prison camp.

A hand-picked team of aides have travelled to Scotland and are in two-week quarantine as they prepare for the arrival of the Queen and Prince Philip.

An insider said: “They are all staying in what’s called the New Block, which is a dull granite outbuilding with a dozen bedrooms near the Castle.

“It replaced a lovely old wooden building a few years ago and it’s pretty bleak.

“Without all the normal facilities which make a stay pleasant for staff, everyone’s saying it’s like being in Colditz, the prisoner of war camp.

“It’s the assignment from hell because there is absolutely nothing people can do.

“The staff have been told they cannot leave the Castle grounds and so can’t visit local pubs or shops.

” The social club remains shut and the staff bar closed. With so little to do they’re going stir-crazy.”

The annual Ghillies Ball, the highlight of the summer at Balmoral, has also been cancelled due to the virus.

The insider added three chefs, footmen, housemaids, pages and under-butlers were among staff already staying at Balmoral.

The staff have been banned from all social activities in an effort to protect Her Majesty, 94, and Philip, 99, from Covid-19.

The couple are due to travel from Windsor Castle for Balmoral within days.

The Queen and Philip are expected to be staying at Balmoral for 12 weeks.
