On Wednesday Netflix announced a deal that will see Meghan and Harry produce documentaries, films and children’s programmes for the streaming giant. This follows a similar deal the company made in 2018 with Barack and Michelle Obama.
Whilst the exact figure has not been released the deal could earn Meghan and Harry up to £76million according to The Sun.
However the paper claims most Britons have little interest in watching their new programmes.
A YouGov poll found 64 percent of the public were “not interested at all” in viewing their shows.
Another 20 percent were “not very interested” in doing so.
On the other hand just three percent said they were “very interested” with another nine percent “fairly interested”.
The balance was made up of people who said they didn’t know whether they had any interest in watching the couple’s shows.
Netflix has over 192million subscribers across the planet making it the largest streaming platform in the world.
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, spoke about how pleased the company is to have Meghan and Harry onboard on Wednesday.
He commented: “Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership.
“We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”
Harry and Meghan caused a global sensation back in January when they announced they would be standing down as senior members of the Royal Family.
Instead the couple vowed to become “financially independent” and to split their time between North America and Britain.
Following discussions with other senior royals they agreed to drop their ‘Sussex Royal’ brand and to repay the taxpayer money spent refurbishing Frogmore Cottage, their former home near Windsor.
Reacting to the deal the Duke and Duchess said: “Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit, of courage, resilience and the need for connection.
“Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.
“As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens.”
After a brief stay in Canada Meghan and Harry moved to California shortly before the coronavirus lockdown began.
They recently brought a new £11.2m home to the north of Los Angeles.
The luxury property comes with a swimming pool, tennis court and children’s cottage.
Prince Harry already has experience with online streaming as he’s been helping to make a documentary on mental health along with Oprah Winfrey for Apple TV+.
He also made an appearance in a Netflix documentary about the Paralympics.
Back in March a new nature documentary was released by Disney which was narrated by Meghan.
