Mr Trump has been a vocal supporter of Her Majesty during his four years in office. He has always been quick to heap praise on the UK’s longest serving monarch, even going as far as saying they had “automatic chemistry” as they “really got to know” each other when they met. But not every meeting went according to Mr Trump’s plan, as he was unable to stay at Buckingham Palace during his trip to the UK last summer, due to refurbishments being carried out.
One UK official, who helped plan the state visit, said: “It was very, very clear Trump loved the Queen.
“He wanted to spend as much time as possible with the Queen and to stay at Buckingham Palace.”
According to the insider the possibility of President Trump staying at the Palace was thoroughly looked into but “it couldn’t work”.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the UK official added: “We went to the point of saying to the Palace ‘can you tell us which rooms are undergoing refurbishment’.
“It was properly looked into. The last thing we wanted was a snub story coming out. But it couldn’t work.”
Mr Trump first met the Queen for tea at Windsor Castle the year before.
When he returned a year later, he brought his whole family with the expectation of being able to put them up in luxury at Buckingham Palace.
This included his wife Melania, as well his four adult children Ivanka, Donald Jr, Eric and Tiffany.
The only child who did not visit was youngest son Barron, who was still only a teenager.
But to Mr Trump’s dismay, the refurbishments at the palace were so extensive that even members of staff had moved out until they were completed.
Instead, the president and his security team were placed in Winfield House, which was the US ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park.
However, there were still concerns over noise disruption.
A White House adviser working on the visit said: “We wondered whether Regent’s Park Mosque would wake him up in the morning.”

Mr Trump’s predecessor Barrack Obama had stayed at Buckingham Palace with wife Michelle.
But Mr Trump did not let this knock back dampen his relationship with the Queen.
The White House advisor added: “I think she is the only person he truly respects.
“I don’t think he was as enamoured with the Pope as the Queen.
“There was a hierarchy of celebrity and she was top.
“It was his mother’s influence.”
The UK government also pulled out all the stops for Mr Trump during his first visit.
As a gift from Number 10, a genealogist traced Mr Trump’s entire Scottish ancestry.
He was then given the full Scottish family tree was presented to the president with a flourish along with a sample of what was quickly named “Trump tartan”.
