Meghan & Harry racked up £250k bill during Africa trip — making it the most expensive royal engagement of the year

LAST year’s royal travel budget showed Meghan and Harry caught 11 charter flights and two passenger jets on their ten-day tour to Africa last September, at a cost of £245,643 to the taxpayer.

The trip was notable for Harry releasing a statement accusing the British press of a “ruthless campaign” against his wife.

The next priciest engagement was Prince Charles’s last-minute private jet from Aberdeen to Oman following the death of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in January.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also facing a backlash over their political meddling as their woke ways wind up the Americans.

They fled Britain six months ago, moaning they felt unable to “thrive” before signing a £100million Netflix mega-deal.

But they have now alienated “a large swathe” of America by charging into politics and backing Democrat Joe Biden.

Their PR nightmare came as it was revealed that Meghan and Harry enjoyed the most expensive royal engagement last year, racking up almost a quarter of a million pounds on their trip to Africa.

‘HATE SPEECH’

The couple headed Stateside months later — but their popularity there is diving after interfering in US affairs.

They recently urged voters there to reject “hate speech” in a clear dig at Donald Trump.

That prompted the President to tweet that he was not “a fan” of Meghan — who on Wednesday appeared from her home by video on TV show America’s Got Talent.

Trump also quipped: “I wish a lot of luck to Harry because he’s gonna need it.”

Eric Schiffer, from US firm Reputation Management Consultants, called their gaffe-prone entrance into politics “lethally stupid”.

He said: “They have already alienated a large swathe of red-state Americans, who will now see her as an out- of-touch liberal elite.

“If you’re trying to build a brand based on the support of people, which Meghan and Prince Harry are seemingly attempting to do, that is stone-cold crazy.

“There is a danger Meghan will be seen as an entitled hypocrite who’s just using her new-found celebrity to attack the President.”

Meghan, 39, and 36-year-old Harry quit as senior royals in March and moved into an £11million, nine-bedroom mansion in Montecito.

‘ENTITLED HYPOCRITE’

But they have been criticised recently by locals, who claim the pair have violated their elite community’s “historic tradition” of avoiding controversy.

Apart from Harry’s televised swipe at Mr Trump, Meghan has in the past labelled him a “misogynist” and “divisive”.

But they have been blasted as “narcissists” as the President’s supporters hit back.

Conservative US author PJ O’Rourke said: “We fought a war in 1776 to keep the British Royal Family’s opinions out of American politics.”

Meghan’s appearance on America’s Got Talent saw her supporting singer Archie Williams.

The 59-year-old was cleared of a 1982 rape and attempted murder only after 36 years in jail.

From her sofa in Montecito, giving an intriguing insight into items around the couple’s home, she said: “Just wanted to let you know that we’ve been moved by your story and we’ve been cheering you.”
