While Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson smiled and waved for the cameras at the beginning of the 90s, focusing on royal duties and their charity work, behind the scenes they were deeply unhappy.
Both of their marriages had crumbled to a point of no return, and both wanted to turn their back on royal life.
Their upset was so strong it brought the two woman, who had experienced a turbulent relationship over the years, back together as they came up with a scheme to walk.
In June 1991 they beamed on the Buckingham Palace balcony at Trooping the Colour, but nobody knew it would be the last time they were ever photographed in public together.
Speaking to Channel 5’s Fergie Vs Diana: Royal Wives at War, the Daily Mail’s Richard Kay claims the two women “plotting” their escape.
He said: “That was the last occasion they were photographed together in public.
“They were both plotting to leave their husbands.
“The world didn’t know, the media didn’t know, but behind the façade of smiles and waves on the palace balcony were two deeply unhappy young women.
“They had actually come up with a scheme that they would go together and they would announce their separations simultaneously to set of this kind of death charge if you like under the royal family.
Royal expert Jennie Bond told the programme about the bravery the two women showed by quitting the royal family.
She said: “To enter the royal family is hard enough, to leave and to jump out of that goldfish bowl is quite something else.
“It obviously demanded a great deal of courage and planning, and I think they spent many a long night on the phone together with their long discussions late into the night about what they should do.
“Fergie was the one who was leading the way on this. She wanted to give Diana the courage to break lose as well.
“She would say ‘you jump, and I’ll jump too.”
While Charles and Diana’s marriage faced problems from day one, Fergie and Andrew seemed very much in love.
At their early engagements they were always holding hands and stroking each other’s backs, much like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
However their relationship started to unravel at the start of the 90s.
Andrew’s job in the Navy meant he was only home for 40 days each year, leaving Fergie home alone with the kids.
On March 19, 1992, the couple announced they were to seperate.
As the news broke, Fergie was seen smiling as she picked Princess Beatrice up from school.
While things were civil at the beginning, everything changed immediately when photos of Sarah having her toes sucked by her financial advisor appeared on the front page of the newspapers.
She was in Balmoral with the Queen and the rest of the royal family when the pictures dropped, and faced a very awkward breakfast with her soon-to-be ex-in-laws.

Jennie explains: “There she was, with all the members of the royal family, who traditionally have all the papers laid out on the breakfast table.
“The scene when she went into the dining room was horrendous, because there were her brothers-in-law turning over the pages and staring at her naked top half of her body.
“It was excruciatingly embarrassing and she went to the Queen, and the Queen was livid.

“She was absolutely furious with Sarah.”
Unsurprisingly, she didn’t stay for long and used a side exit to make a quick escape.
She jumped on a plane at Aberdeen airport and headed back to London.
In December 1993 Prince Charles and Diana’s separation was announced in the House of Commons.
Fergie later released a biography sharing her secrets on life in the royal family, while Diana gave her famous Panorama interview where she spoken openly about the breakdown of her marriage.
