“The science is clear. Eating the right foods can lead to a longer, healthier life,” it said.

“A basic heart-healthy diet can help you control your weight. That’s important because more than a third of people 65 and older are obese.

“A heart-healthy diet is one that includes: Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products like yogurt and cheese, skinless poultry, lots of fish, nuts and beans, [and] non-tropical vegetable oils.

“Salmon and other fish, like trout and herring, are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help lower your chances of heart disease and may help with high blood pressure, among other things.”

Meanwhile, you could also increase your chances of living to 100 by drinking more coffee, it’s been claimed.

Coffee contains a number of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that protect against a number of conditions.

You could lower your chances of developing diabetes, dementia and even Parkinson’s disease by drinking coffee.

But you should avoiding drinking more than four cups of coffee every day.

Regular exercise is a crucial aspect to improving overall health, and helping you to live longer.

People that do regular exercise are up to 50 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and some cancers, said the NHS.

It may even slash the chances of coronary heart disease and stroke by up to 35 percent.

All UK adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
