The Prince and Princess of Wales had a tumultuous marriage to say the least, never staying long out of the headlines and both partners having extramarital affairs. Married for 15 years and despite having what was widely billed as a ‘fairytale wedding’, the union famously did not last and the couple finalized their divorce in 1996 after separating in 1992.
The following year, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris, aged just 36.
The princess was not shy in showing her dissatisfaction with royal rules and protocol – as shown in her clear distancing from the royal brand following her separation from Charles.
Sometimes it is easy to see why Diana became so fed up with the myriad of sometimes bizarre stipulations that came with being the future Queen consort.
One of the stranger ‘rules’ was regarding Diana’s height.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles were actually the same height, despite several staged photos designed to make you believe otherwise.
Princess Diana was 5ft 10 inches tall – making her taller than the average woman in the UK, and the same height as her husband, the Prince of Wales.
She was banned from wearing heels during public engagements with her husband – something that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall does not have to abide by.
In the couple’s engagement announcement, Charles is clearly set up to look an entire head taller than his then fiance – and the same happened again when Charles and Diana released their official wedding photos.
It is suspected this was done to promote traditional gender roles and not to emasculate the future king.
Their two children – Princes William and Harry – did not miss out on the tall gene given to them by their mother.
Prince William is estimated to be 6ft 2, whereas his little brother Prince Harry is estimated to stand at 6ft 1.
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge is another tall spouse in the Royal Family – estimate to measure around 5ft 8.
Meghan Markle is a little shorter than her royal relations, standing at around 5ft 5.
Queen Elizabeth II herself is smaller in comparison, with a height of 5ft 2 – the same height as her late mother.
Prince Philip is believed to be 6ft tall, making him a similar height to his grandchildren William and Harry.
Prince Charles is actually the shortest of his brothers – Prince Andrew it thought to be 6ft tall like is father.
Prince Edward is also thought to be around 6ft, keeping it consistent within the family.
Their sister, Princess Anne, is closer to Charles in height – standing at 5ft 5.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is a little shorter than Princess Diana, thought to be around 5ft 8.
