When the temptation for a snack comes calling, it’s often hard to ignore. You deserve to treat yourself every now and then, right? With everything going on in your day-to-day, sometimes you just really need that salty or sweet snack. We know—this one is a real soul-crusher. But here us out! See, there are actually quite a few reasons why potato chips are rather problematic.
For starters, they really are addictive. So it’s pretty near impossible to ever eat just one chip—think about it, no one has just one! Plus, one Harvard study found that the participants who ate potato chips as a part of their diet, in fact, gained weight every year they were assessed.
Plus, there is the sodium to consider. It should come as no surprise that consuming salty foods every day will lead to bloating. One study in The American Journal of Gastroenterology even found that bloating was, in fact, more common in those who ate a high-sodium diet compared to those who ate a low-sodium diet. Women already have to deal with bloating from factors that don’t have to do with diet (hello, monthly periods!), so eating chips will just make the bloat that much worse.
Simply put, the excess salt you would be consuming if you’re often eating potato chips is not ideal for your health, especially when it comes to your heart. Plenty of evidence exists that high sodium intake is associated with a higher risk of developing high blood pressure. Although this isn’t an immediate side effect of eating a bag of chips, if your diet is filled with a lot of salty foods you eat daily, the risk of developing hypertension, suffering from a stroke, heart failure, stomach cancer, and kidney disease, could happen as well, as these conditions have been linked to excessive sodium intake. Keep in mind, according to the CDC, one in every four female deaths is a result of heart disease. So you don’t want to be eating a snack every day that could possibly contribute to heart disease, right?
