Ghislaine Maxwell told investigators Prince Andrew’s accuser told a “long list of lies” when she was grilled about a man believed to be the royal, documents released today reveal.
Although Andrew’s name was redacted in a trove of transcripts which her lawyers fought to keep sealed, details in them strongly suggest Maxwell was quizzed about the Duke of York.
She denied she had ever arranged for Virginia Giuffre – then a teenager – to have sex with Andrew or anyone else.
She also said she had no recollection of Ms Giuffre going into a room alone with a man whose name was removed from public documents – but who is thought to be the Duke of York.
The transcripts suggest she was shown an infamous photo of Andrew with Ms Giuffre when she was 17, with Maxwell in the background.
Maxwell told investigators she could not recall having dinner and then going to another location with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, Ms Giuffre and this man.
During her recorded interrogation, Maxwell said of Ms Giuffre, who in 2001 was named Virginia Roberts: “Just for the record I have never at any time, at anyplace, in any moment ever asked Virginia Roberts or whatever she is called now to have sex with anybody.”
Ms Giuffre claims she was forced to have sex with the prince at Maxwell’s London townhouse in March 2001 – an allegation he denies.
Maxwell, 58, has pleaded not guilty to helping Epstein recruit and groom underage girls as young as 14 to engage in illegal sexual acts in the mid-1990s, and not guilty to perjury for having denied involvement in any such scheme when she gave her deposition under oath.
Her lawyers had fought had to prevent the publication of the extensive documents, having called the questioning “extremely personal, confidential and subject to considerable abuse by the media”.
Asked if she had introduced a figure, believed to be the prince, to Epstein, she said: “That would be another of Virginia’s lies you perpetrate.
“I never introduced (name redacted) to Jeffrey Epstein at any time, so just add that to the long line of lies.”
She was then asked: “Did you introduce (redacted) to any girls under the age of 18 who were not friends of yours children?”
Maxwell responded: “I have not introduced (redacted) to anyone that I am aware of other than friends who have kids under that age that he may have met socially through me.”
Maxwell said she had “no recollection” of introducing Ms Giuffre to the man believed to be Andrew, stating: “I understand her story about (name redacted) but again, her tissue of lies is extremely hard to pick apart what is and what isn’t.
“Actually I wouldn’t recollect her at all but for her tissue stories about this situation.”
Maxwell said she did not recall Ms Giuffre being with her and Epstein when they travelled to London in 2001, and no memory of her being at her townhouse.
She was then asked if she recalled going to dinner with Epstein, Ms Giuffre and the man thought to be Andrew, which she denied.
Maxwell then said she did not remember the group going to another location – which could be Tramp’s nightclub, where Ms Giuffre claims she was with Andrew – stating: “I do not have any recollection of it and I doubt it ever happened.”
Prince Andrew infamously said he had not been at the venue that night, saying he was at a Pizza Express in Woking.
Maxwell was then asked about a visit by the unnamed figure to New York in Spring 2001.
She said she did recall the visit, but could not recall the date.
Asked if she had given this person a puppet, she responded: “I never gave him a gift of a puppet.”
As The Mirror reported in August, Andrew was claimed to have groped two girls with a Spitting Image puppet of himself.
Maxwell said she was not aware of Epstein having giving him such a puppet either.
The transcript then shows Maxwell was shown a photo taken inside her townhouse – which appears to refer to an image of Andrew with his arm around Ms Giuffre, with Maxwell in the background.
Asked if Epstein had taken it, she said: “You can come up with 50 names, I still do not know who took the picture.”
She was asked: “Did you observe (name redacted) go into a room with Virginia alone in your town home?”
Maxwell responded: “I cannot recall.”
She said Epstein nor the man thought to be Andrew had ever told her the royal had sex with Ms Giuffre.
Maxwell was then asked if the man thought to be Andrew had ever visited Epstein’s Little St James island.
She said yes, but could not recall how many times.
Maxwell denied there were underage girls on the island, stating: “There were no girls on the island at all.
“No girls, no women, other than the staff who work at the house.”
Asked if she had ever arranged for Ms Giuffre to have sex with the man thought to be Andrew, she said: “Just for the record I have never at any time, at anyplace, in any moment ever asked Virginia Roberts or whatever she is called now to have sex with anybody.”
The Prince has always denied any wrongdoing.
On Monday a federal appeal court in the US ruled the 2016 deposition, given by Maxwell in a civil case brought by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, could be made public.
Maxwell settled the defamation case in 2017 but media organizations applied to have the documents in the case made public and they are being released on a rolling basis.
Despite Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring an underage girl for prostitution Maxwell refuses several times to testify if she believed the paedophile financier had had sexual relationships with minors.
Maxwell, daughter of the late British publisher Robert Maxwell, was asked a series of probing questions about her relationship with Epstein.
“I have never seen anybody have sexual intercourse with Jeffrey, ever,” the deposition transcript says, and later: “I never saw any inappropriate underage activities with Jeffrey ever.”
As for Giuffre, she said: “I never ever at any single time at any point ever at all participated in anything with Virginia and Jeffrey. And for the record, she is an absolute total liar.”
