The common breakfast drink you should avoid – it could raise your diabetes risk

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be be raising your risk of high blood sugar by regularly drinking certain fruit juices, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial that if you think you may have diabetes, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

Making some changes to your daily diet is one of the easiest ways to manage your blood sugar levels.

Fruit juice may be increasing your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, according to medical website Diabetes.co.uk.

They often contain large amounts of added sugar, which subsequently raises blood sugar levels over a very short space of time.

Drinking just three portions of fruit juice every week could increase your diabetes risk by up to eight percent, scientists have revealed.

In general, it’s a better idea for diabetes patients to choose whole fruits instead of fruit juices.

“Fruit juice contains a large amount of sugar which raises blood sugar levels very quickly,” said the medical website.

“Therefore, people with diabetes are usually best to avoid drinking fruit juice.

“As a general rule, eating whole fruit is healthier than drinking fruit juice or fruit smoothies.

“Once regarded as a healthy drink, recent research indicates that that regular consumption of fruit juice may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”

Whole fruits tend to contain soluble fibre, which helps to improve digestion.

It also slows down the any blood sugar levels rise, which is crucial for diabetes patients.

But they still contain carbohydrates, which may also trigger hyperglycaemia in some patients, if eaten in large quantities.

Therefore, while whole fruit is still better than fruit juice, you should still eat your fruit in moderation.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
