Prince Philip beams as he makes rare appearance at Beatrice’s wedding

It is his granddaughter’s wedding day so it was no surprise that Prince Philip made his first appearance in public this year to watch Princess Beatrice get married.

Beatrice, who is ninth in line to the throne, married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in secret after their original wedding had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The Duke of Edinburgh has not been seen publicly since he left King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London on Christmas Eve after spending four nights under doctors’ care last year.

While leaving, the Prince got into a car in a secluded street behind the hospital and sat in the front passenger seat.

He did not respond to photographers as he was driven away from the private hospital but he did wave at a nurse as he was escorted to the car.

But today the 99-year-old and the Queen, 94, were among a small group of close family and friends who attended the intimate ceremony at All Saints Chapel, Windsor Great Park, this morning.

The couple were driven from Windsor Castle, where they have spent lockdown, to the wedding three miles away.

Before his appearance today, Buckingham Palace released a commemorative photo to mark Prince Philip’s 99th birthday on June 10.

The photo showed the Prince and the Queen at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, where the couple had been shielding since March 19, days before the UK went into lockdown.

The Queen’s favourite residence, dubbed Operation HMS Bubble, had a reduced household of around 20 staff.

The snap was taken a week before the Prince’s birthday and showed the Duke in a military Household Division tie and double-breasted jacket, stood beside the head of state wearing an Angela Kelly dress with the Cullinan V diamond brooch first worn by Queen Mary.

Philip has spent much of his retirement at his cottage, Wood Farm, on the Sandringham estate, more than 100 miles away from the Queen, 94, who was usually at Buckingham Palace or Windsor.

Beatrice and Edo announced their engagement last year and planned to marry in May.

One of Beatrice’s friends told The Sun : “They were obviously very keen for the Queen to come so the wedding had to happen before she goes up to Balmoral so this was a great opportunity.

“So many guests were disappointed not to make the big day but understood the reason for it.

“They are just like a normal family and had to make sacrifices like many others have up and down the country and looking forward to having a wonderful celebration when the time is right.”

Beatrice and Edoardo began dating in autumn 2018 reportedly getting back in touch at Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank.
